The ship is a square rigger - the type which used to do the grain-run to and from Australia, right up until the '14-'18 war. This looks like a shot of Creek Street (now Creekside) whose houses backed onto the creek before they were demolished.
Hi Andy, sorry bad of me just to shout out like that. The angle of the shot, seemed to remind me of the the Deptford Dry Dock just off Deptford Green. But having looked further, I think I've found it. It seems it's the S.V. Penang in the Britannia Dock, Deptford Ferry Road, Isle of Dogs. I have seen this photo attributed to many different location. In the 1930's my family lived in Bishop's Buildings, off Lower Thames Street as it was then. My mother drew a layout of the cottages and who lived in the and this looks remarkably similar. The ship would be moored at Billingsgate beach, later Wood Wharf.
They would go on the roof during the summer and watch a regatta, unfortunately I know nothing else about that.
